Three More Romney Lies (and counting)

By Steve Deace

There are no depths known to modern geology that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will not sink to.

At Thursday night’s final debate before the Florida Primary, Romney found an even deeper crevice to burrow himself into by flat-out lying on at least three occasions.

Lie #1: Willard said he has always voted for Republicans when he had the opportunity.  This is false.  In March 1992, in the Massachusetts primary, he had the opportunity to vote for George H.W. Bush or Pat Buchanan, but chose instead to vote for pro-population control Democrat Paul Tsongas.

Lie #2: Willard said his investments in Fannie and Freddie were in a blind trust and he wasn’t responsible for profiting off of their failures.  This is false.  As National Journal reports, at least one fund in which Governor Romney made between 15K and 50K in interest from investments, was not a blind trust and included investments in Fannie and Freddie.

It is also worth noting that Willard has also flip flopped on whether blind trusts are an appropriate excuse for not being able to exercise influence over them.  In 1994, he criticized Senator Ted Kennedy for using the exact same defense he tried to use Thursday night. A disturbing yet reoccurring pattern for a candidate and a party establishment that is so desperate to stop conservatives in their own party, they will do whatever it takes and tell every lie it takes to win.

Lie #3: Mittens claimed he had not seen the ad “Hechos” in which he falsely accuses Speaker Gingrich of calling Spanish a “ghetto language.”  Yet in the ad, Governor Romney says (in Spanish) that he approves the message.  So was he lying during the debate or was he lying about approving the message? Given Willard’s proven penchant for lying and flip-flopping, it’s doubtful he even knows — or would be honest with conservatives if he did.

Lots of politicians are liars. Lots of politicians are flip-floppers. But Willard might be the first politician to flip-flop on his own lies while simultaneously lying about his flip-flops.

Sadly, though, the party establishment backing Romney won’t care that he’s a liar, because many of them are as well.  They’re more afraid of a conservative in the White House than Obama, because that would mean losing control of the party infrastructure that allows them to grease palms and game the system, thus they’ll just encourage Romney to keep shamelessly lying if it means winning.

The only question is will the rest of us out here in the grassroots continue to let them (and Romney) get away with it.
