Time to End the Corruption

by Judd Saul

My name is Judd Saul. I am a Conservative Tea Party Christian Activist from Cedar Falls, Iowa. For far too long, I have been sitting back listening and watching as our so-called Christian leaders continuously sell us out for either campaign donations or just pure power or “influence.”

For years, my family has generously donated to campaigns and causes. We are always glad to give to something worthwhile. After all, we need to fight the good fight, don’t we? Then one day, I woke up. I asked myself where all this money is really going. Why is nothing ever changing? Why do things seem to get worse? Then you realize you’re getting hit from 30 different organizations delivering the same message: “The sky is falling, please send $25!”

The rude awakening hit me this year. The same people pleading the same message came through my own family door. But this time, things were a little tougher across Iowa. The economy is down. People seem to be more desperate.

Enter Steve Sheffler, head of Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition and Republican National Committeeman. During the course of this year’s Iowa caucus process, he walked into my mother’s office. He gave the same pitch and asked for 20k. My mom was a little hesitant. He then said that “she would make a great delegate to the national convention.” She told him that I (Judd Saul) am more active in Iowa politics and that I should be the one to go. He declined, stating that I am “too tea party” and that it “wouldn’t work” (for what, I’m not sure). This exchange and its implications made my mom very uncomfortable with the situation. She chose not to donate. Not because of me, but because what he “offered” based on her making a donation was completely unethical.

I have since then spoken to others who have had the exact same experience as my mother. The plea, the veiled promise, the desperate close.

This is how he plays the game.

Steve Scheffler has been going around Iowa asking for very hefty donations to the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition in the price range of 10-20 thousand dollars. Then, to sweeten the deal, he offers a near guaranteed seat to the National Convention. He has a “Top List” which he hands out to his supporters and tells them to vote for who is on the list. It’s referred to as “Scheffler’s List.” (not kidding)

So, if you’re in Iowa and Scheffler approaches you at the district and state conventions, (you know who you are), I implore you–Do not play his game any longer. It’s wrong! (I was one of you.)

He has been doing this all over Iowa for far too long. It is time to get rid of the corruption.

To put a finer point on this, ask yourselves this question: Where are the voter guides? Scheffler has been (allegedly) fundraising and collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars to print voter guides via IFFC but there are none! We were promised voter guides for the caucus this year. That’s why many of us were giving. Have you actually seen any of the voter guides in your church? I haven’t. If they were there, maybe we would have had a better voter turnout from the churches.

It time to stand up for what is right without compromise! Where has compromising gotten us? Look around—are things better in our state for all the “activism” and fundraising of Steve Scheffler?

I will not sit here any longer and tolerate people using the name of Jesus Christ to raise money and line their pockets. Because of my awakening to the realities of what is happening in our state (and across the country), I have decided to announce my campaign for National Committeeman.

Judd Saul is a well-known Iowa Tea Party activist from Black Hawk County.

I will pray for your success because you are going to need Gods help overcoming the “good ole boy establishment”.

  • Brian Cook

I didn’t realize you could be too “Tea Party”, so I am probably also guilty. Which means I probably won’t be the chosen one in Senate District 48, over here in Eastern Iowa. Judd sheds light on a big problem facing conservatives who feel left out in the cold. Crony Capitaloism is destroying the system, but it harms the Republicans the most.

Thanks for this article and for exposing the tactics of the “establishment.”   I was disappointed, although not shocked, to read the treatment your mother received.

And just to be clear, there are also thousands of Conservative Tea Party Athiest Activists out there every day leading the charge for limited government as well.  I just don’t want the movement to be confused with not welcoming jews, muslims, athiests, hindus, budists, Native Americans, and people from other faiths and walks of life.  The thing I like most about the Tea Party is that it isn’t about shoving social issues down your throat, social engineering, and more government laws and rules stipulating what you can and can’t down in the privacy of your own home.  I find it interesting that the Tea Party was formed largely for the same reason Occupy Wall Street was founded — to protest the government sponsored bailouts of private industry.  We can all be proud to carry the banner of small government, lower taxes, and more personal freedom and liberty regardless of what faith we represent.

I’m not sure what this guy’s agenda is but I can tell you some facts. I was a delegate to the National convention and got there in no small part with the help of Steve that included a lot of work for the party and being on that list he talks about.  I never was ask by Steve Sheffler or anyone else to give a dime nor did I give anything.  I have good conservative friends that four years ago was a national delegate in no small part for all the work he did and by being on that list.  He never gave a dime nor was he ask to. As to the voter guides I have received thousands of them for free and have distributed them in this four county area for years. I do know that there are individuals that for whatever their reason don’t like Steve and want to promote their agenda.  These people seem to love to try and destroy others to have it their way. I you are a deligate to the state convention please consider the source and the motivations of those who make these claims.

Sir, I am glad you got to the national delegation without giving Steve Scheffler a dime. But it does not change the fact that he tried to sell it to my mother. He has done this to others and I am pleading with them to come out. But like I stated on my post. Do not cover up for anyone who is corrupt. Do not bury your heads in the sand. For you are doing no one any good. It is time to fight for truth and honesty within the Christian movement, and the Republican party. I have nothing to hide.  I will share with you another story… a TRUE story!  2 Years ago, Steve came over to ask for a 25 thousand dollar donation to help conservative Christian candidates.. We gave. The voter guides and mailers showed up 2 days after the election. Things are not what they seem. I am a Christian Conservative. My intentions are this.. We need to clean up the corruption! When someone asks for money in Jesus’s name.. They better be using it wisely! When someone asks for a donation to their Christian organization they should not use political bribes to get it. ITS WRONG!  I plead with everyone who knows the truth to come out!

I have attended the Statewide GOP convention (including the one in 2008) where “Scheffler’s List” was certainly circulated and Christians were expected to march in lock-step with Steve Scheffler’s wishes.  I believe you were not asked to pay any money – but Steve must have felt he could either influence you – or count on your loyalty – for any votes.  He “rewards” those who are loyal to him — and gives tough retribution (punishment) to those who oppose him in any way.  15 years ago I thought Steve Scheffler was a great gift to the Christian Community in Iowa — but it’s possible he has lost sight of his initial goals and now has become what he first fought.  No one can deny how hard he works to advance Christian causes.  But Iowans gave him too much power and influence — and absolute power corrupts absolutely — and sad to say Mr. Scheffler should no longer be the “standard bearer” of conservative Christians in Iowa.  Having said that, I’m not sure Judd Saul is either.  It’s time Christians think for themselves, and “test the spirit” of the politicians they support.  Stop taking someone else’s word for it.

I should also tell you that I am a Tea Party Supporter and have been involved in pushing that agenda for a long time before there was a “Tea Party” I welcome all the help from those who have recently seen the light.

Judd, I have attended an event or two at your parents’ home for conservative candidates.  Have hilarious stories to tell from them, but one very memorable moment was in 2007 watching Steve Scheffler (I call him the pantywaister) hand out questions that were to be asked on small slips of paper, then watching an appointed Scheffler acolyte be the one to stand by the presidential candidates “choosing” which person was to get their question answered.

This was the exact same time the republicans were slamming Hillary for hand-picking the people allowed to ask (soft) questions.  Then I saw Chet Culver do the same thing for a photo op the day of the marriage rally…sending out one of his employees to be able to smile & handshake with.  Democrat political techniques (the worst ones) used by OUR side.

Your parents were used, and I am glad they are done with that.   Scheffler is a user and power-broker.  Our side needs integrity, and Scheffler has none.
