Position vs. Conviction

As voters continue to look for useful ways to help them vet the Republican presidential candidates, a campaign pledge unlike any other was unveiled on Wednesday to help voters learn who truly believes that all life is sacred and a gift from God.

For years GOP presidential candidates have gotten away with giving lip service to the belief that the unalienable right to life applies to all from the moment of conception, and have scraped by on promising to sign a myriad of well-intentioned but ineffective legislation that ends with the words “and then you can kill the baby.”

Thanks to the Personhood USA Pledge released in advance of 2008 Iowa Caucus winner Mike Huckabee’s pro-life event in Des Moines Wednesday night, those days of letting politicians off the hook with talking points and clichés have come to an end. Huckabee is himself a supporter of the Personhood USA Pledge.

“Believing that every human life, unborn and born, has intrinsic worth and equal value is the underpinning of our nation’s moral core,” Huckabee said. “As one who lived through the Jim Crow laws of the South and saw how people of color were treated as ‘less’ I am encouraged that the Personhood movement is reminding us that all people are deserving of the protections afforded us as human beings. We should never ask people to determine if one person is ‘more’ valuable than another because of wealth, appearance, IQ, ancestry, ethnic origin, or physical capacity. Attempts to dismiss the concept of Personhood will eventually be met with common sense and common decency. Until then, we must continue to speak out boldly for the rights of all to enjoy ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’”

Now we find out who has a position on the sanctity of all human life, and who has a conviction. This pledge compels a candidate to “speak out boldly for the rights of all” as Huckabee said. So far three candidates have risen to the occasion.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have signed their names to the Personhood USA Pledge which states:

I stand with President Ronald Reagan in supporting “the unalienable personhood of every American, from the moment of conception until natural death,” and with the Republican Party platform in affirming that I “support a human life amendment to the Constitution, and endorse legislation to make clear that the 14th Amendment protections apply to unborn children.”

I believe that in order to properly protect the right to life of the vulnerable among us, every human being at every stage of development must be recognized as a person possessing the right to life in federal and state laws without exception and without compromise. I recognize that in cases where a mother’s life is at risk, every effort should be made to save the baby’s life as well; leaving the death of an innocent child as an unintended tragedy rather than an intentional killing.

I oppose assisted suicide, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, and procedures that intentionally destroy developing human beings.

I pledge to the American people that I will defend all innocent human life. Abortion and the intentional killing of an innocent human being are always wrong and should be prohibited.

If elected President, I will work to advance state and federal laws and amendments that recognize the unalienable right to life of all human beings as persons at every stage of development, and to the best of my knowledge, I will only appoint federal judges and relevant officials who will uphold and enforce state and federal laws recognizing that all human being at every stage of development are person with the unalienable right to life.

Candidates are still welcome to sign on to the pledge at any time between now and the January 3rd Iowa Caucuses. As I am quoted as saying in the press release announcing the pledge:  

“This pledge is the most basic articulation of the unalienable right to life. Pro-life voters should consider who has a position on the sanctity of life and who has a conviction on the sanctity of life by the way the candidates respond to this pledge. As a pro-life voter, I know that I won’t vote for anyone on January 3rd that hasn’t signed this pledge.”

With that in mind, this pledge is useful because the principle and methodology behind Personhood is the only way I believe we will finally end the scourge of child killing in America. Relying on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade has frankly been a fool’s errand for 38 long, blood-stained years. A presidential candidate that does not understand that the first and most important role of any form of government is to protect our God-given rights simply cannot be trusted to defend the unalienable right to life—and thus cannot honor their oath of office.

As the Declaration of Independence puts it:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. That among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

On a personal note, I was most disappointed that Texas Congressman Ron Paul refused to initially sign the pledge when offered the opportunity to do so. I will disclose that for the past couple of days I practically made it my personal mission to persuade his campaign to obtain his signature on the pledge.

Considering how eloquently he has spoke up on the sanctity of life in the past, and how much of a champion of the Founding Fathers’ vision for this country he has been throughout his career, it is simply inexplicable that Congressman Paul has yet to sign this pledge, which is lifted right from the writings of the Founders themselves

I have previously said that Paul made my list of candidates I was willing to vote for, but that was before this pledge became a part of the vetting process. As I stated in the press release announcing the pledge, I will not vote for a candidate that doesn’t sign this pledge because it contains the basic articulation of the most sacred of all rights—the unalienable right to life.

What is even more disheartening about this pledge lacking Congressman Paul’s signature is that three of the people I respect the most in Iowa politics – State Reps. Kim Pearson, Jason Schultz, and Glen Massie – each voted for Personhood in the Iowa Legislature this past session, and each of them has endorsed Paul for president. In addition, Pearson and Massie went so far as to criticize legislation which only seeks to regulate abortion such as what is featured in the Susan B. Anthony pledge—which Congressman Paul has signed.

It appears as if my friends Pearson and Massie may need to educate their own presidential candidate and urge him to provide his much-needed signature on the pledge, or perhaps they endorsed the wrong candidate.

    Your guest the other day, Alan Keyes, had it quite right, that Roe v Wade is not a law and should have been ignored from the beginning at every level ,state and local and federal.

    That is precisely the argument of Dr. Paul, one which he has repeatedly put into legislation with the Sanctity of LIfe Act.  He has introduced the We the people Act to make personhaood at conception a matter of law.

    There is all a matter of long historical record which Dr. Paul has gone over  a million times.  You know he isn’t a charlatan like Gingrich who will sign anything and pander to anyone and then ignore them as soon as he’s in office.  You don’t need a million new clauses in a specious pledge … look at the fruit.  You simply need someone who isn’t going to use the govt. as a tool to enforce the globalist eugenics program.  That man is Ron Paul

     I wouldn’t doubt this is nothing but a tactic to create a false issue from a phony movement that hasn’t and won’t accomplish anything except to distract and divide and end up keeping the status quo.

    In my humble opinion if we have to beg and plead and beg and plead some more for a candidate to sign something that should be a no brain-er for a truly pro life candidate, and they FINALLY sign it right before the Caucuses, it won’t have much of an impact on me, that would simply mean to me they are doing it only to get votes and not because it is a conviction they have.

    I have heard Ron Paul say that in the case of embryonic stem cell research he couldn’t see a reason to oppose it if the embryo would have died anyway, such as in a tubal pregnancy. You want him to oppose ALL stem cell research and because he is a man who takes oaths and pledges seriously (as opposed to most politicians who will do so to appease people like you even though they have zero integrity) and I would imagine this could be one reason he has not signed it.

    The other reason stems from his correct belief that the Federal government should have nothing to do with legislating punishments for crimes that fall under the states’ jurisdiction, such as murder, rape, etc. He supports clearly defining life at the Federal level, but leaves it to the states to decide the punishment for murder. He is a Constitutionalist.

    Frankly, having been actively pro-life (including getting arrested with Operation Rescue) I find Paul’s strategy the BEST for saving babies. Yet it is misconstrued to be pro-choice when in fact it is the most effective way for us to save the unborn.

    Steve, do you really want to save babies or just win favor with the Republican establishment… maybe even getting your own show on Fox one day? Take a look at what you’re doing to the reputation of a very decent, good, intelligent and PRO-LIFE man.

    FYI – I am pro-life and I would easily sign the Susan B. Anthony pledge, but I would not sign your pledge as it goes beyond the limits of the Constitution and is far too broad when including non-aborted embryos (those from tubal pregnancies who would never have a chance to live or those who die from natural deaths) as being prohibited from embryonic stem cell research.

    Sure, lots of politicians will sign it, but how many will mean it anyway? Either you do not understand the Constitution or you’re purposefully painting a Ron Paul in a bad light.

    Republican Party is the defender of life, I’m a unicorn. Time for you and the

    for one am sick of your hypocrisy. Maybe concepts like the protection of life
    in its totality are too abstract compared to a football field for you, but some
    of us care about life in a more meaningful fashion. Tell me I’m wrong; I’d love
    to know how the modifications above are incorrect, especially for the
    candidates who have already signed it.

    Well, as Ron Paul would never sign on to something just to pander to his audience, I’m afraid this is where you and the RP people part ways.  It bugs me that you act ‘surprised’ he won’t sign it as though you didn’t already know that. You already know his position on abortion and he isn’t going to change it at the last second.  Just be honest and admit this is your way of saying, ‘Sorry,  I’m not supporting RP b/c he isn’t willing to back my specific ‘strategy’ instead of the constitution.’

      No one is forcing people to come to God with this. We are protecting people who cannot defend themselves. Also, other than marriage and life, what has Deace said that supports federal action over state action?

        It’s the same old misconception, over and over again …. that only the big central authorities can protect life, liberty, freedom, etc., when in fact those institutions are always the gravest threat to those very things ..

        Isn’t it (at least) POSSIBLE, that small, human-sized, institutions such as local-government, communities, and churches will ALWAYS be the greatest protectors of life?  And if so, isn’t empowering them the best thing to do for the unborn?

          What are the local government, communities and churches doing today to protect the lives of the unborn?   Yes, they should be the greatest protectors of life, but if they are not doing their job (and they aren’t!) government should enforce the right each of those persons has to life.

            It doesn’t matter if he has said anything else or not.  Steve Deace either believes that the spirit of God is best manifested in free men and women, or he doesn’t.   He either believes in local self-governance or he doesn’t.  He either believes mariage is a church funtion or he doesn’t.  He either belives punishing murderers is a state function as defined in our constitution, or he doesn’t.

            See, the problem is, there is always that one issue conservatives are willing to throw away their small government principles in order to achieve.  But once everyone’s special issue has been accounted for, there is no room left for the small government part.  And, we are supposed to be in agreement about what happens when you throw away small government in favor of large, central government, i.e. … man-kind suffers … babies suffer, the unborn suffer…

            You gave marriage to the government and look what happened.  You gave abortion to the feds and look what happened.  Can’t we try to go the other way and see what happens?  Maybe it will work better… we are conservatives, right?

This is not our realm.

            Decentralization is our realm.  The local, hearth and home, the community, the church.  This is where we rule.  This is our power base …  Don’t play their game by their rules.  We must shatter those large power structures and empower ourselves. 

            This pledge and the Steve Deace strategy to protect life are going in the wrong direction…

    Steve, I appreciate the pledge. I do believe that people can sign things that they have no intention of keeping or that they do not truly believe. We have to look at past actions (or inactions) to have any true understanding of what the candidates believe and practice.

    So my question is: Do you believe, Steve, that this is the only route to ending abortion?  Do you really believe that Dr. Paul, an OB doctor, doesn’t hold a conviction about abortion? 

    Ron Paul wants to:
    1) Repeal Roe v. Wade by passing a “Life at Conception Act”
    2) Remove abortion from jurisdiction of the federal courts by passing his “We the People Act”

    He has pledged that he’s not playing politics with the lives of unborn children, by choosing the path that pleases the most people or helps a group raise the most money. 

    I believe that the heart of this election is philosophical.  Do Republicans truly want to put an end to the Federal government looming over every aspect of our lives?  Do Republicans want to continue to give their power away to black robed, unaccountable judges?  Do Republicans want to elect someone that just gives lip service to the Constitution? 

    Do you really believe a man like Ron Paul holds just “positions” rather than convictions on anything?

    ooo-kay .. so the flip-flopingest candidates on the ballat ant wait to sign a document to get your endorsement, and the man who really means every stroke of his pen hasn’t rushed into the fray .. maybe its the embryonic stem cell research section or the euthanasia part but i wouldn’t rush to sign it.  guess ill go back to ignoring your show.

    Here is the hang up – ‘I believe that in order to properly protect the right to life of the vulnerable among us, every human being at every stage of development must be recognized as a person possessing the right to life in federal and state laws without exception and without compromise.’ NOTE – Without compromise means that according to the wording we cannot fight to save unborn children stripping the den of wolves in DC of this authority and atrocity committed by the Federal Government forcing states to accept abortion as the law of the land. 
    With this standard, it strips the rights of people and the States to reject this statute.
    So in short our stubbornness is allowing millions to babies to die instead of immediately saving potentially thousands of babies lives by fighting this from the ground up.
    So who is the real pro-lifer and the demagogue? Dig down deep and think.
    I’ve voted pro-life my whole life and that has produced 0 at the Federal Level – Let us take this battle to the States and stop the demagogue and start genuinely protecting life.
