Iowa House Republicans are pushing for a “compromise” Health and Human Services (HHS) budget bill that will use your taxpayer money to abort a baby if he or she is “abnormal.”
Yes, you read it right. I’m not making it up. Republicans want your money to be used to kill a child deemed “abnormal” by the medical establishment.
Iowa Republicans. You know, the party whose platform says,
“We believe human life is a sacred gift from our Creator and is a fundamental right as outlined in the Declaration of Independence. This right is innately valuable in every stage and development, including the unborn and the elderly, the terminally or chronically ill, and the mentally or physically handicapped. No human life should ever be diminished, and innocent human life must never be taken arbitrarily.”
A little background:
At the beginning of this never-ending session, House Republican leadership stated that they would not use taxpayer money to fund abortion with the (non-existent but ubiquitous) exception of life of the mother. In keeping with that promise, the original HHS budget passed the Republican House with only the “life of the mother” exception, removing the immoral and inhumane language the Democrats wanted, including exceptions for health of the mother, rape, incest, and fetal abnormalities.
Then comes the marathon budget talks where the Republicans have done all the compromising and Democrats are the one making a principled stand. Since they know they will win, Senate Democrats are insisting they will not pass the HHS bill without the original language including the life, health, rape, incest and fetal abnormalities exceptions.
Tuesday night, the House Republicans in conference committee agreed to give the Democrats what they want (life, health, rape and incest, and fetal abnormalities) but will include language that requires the mother to sign an informed consent document and have an ultrasound before she kills the baby. House leadership is incorrectly informing the ranks that it is federal law that requires the rape and incest exceptions. This is the same Republican leadership who refused to let a “clean” life at conception bill reach the floor of the House.
Rumor has it that the Republicans do not have enough votes on their own to pass the bill, so some House Democrats have agreed to sign onto it. Why not? It has all their favorite baby-killing language! It’s a total capitulation! How’s that for bipartisanship? But hey, at least they get to go on their vacations.
The vote on this immoral travesty is slated for 10 a.m. Let them know what you think. Kraig Paulsen, Speaker of the House’s office phone number is (515) 281.3521. You can find your representatives email here. Please, watch very carefully how your representative votes on this issue. Enough is Enough.
Forewarned is forearmed.
