Two comments on tonight’s first hour regarding the false interpretation of Biblical teaching on sexuality and dietary laws.  Steve’s exegesis was well put in the time allotted and the venue, but there’s a more fundamental point to be made about why God defines correct, and proscribes aberrant, sexual behavior throughout Scripture and for all time–and why that is different from dietary laws.

First comment:  Heterosexual monogamy reflects two realities that God has hard-wired into this creation.  One: humans created in the image of God are created by sexual reproduction via the union of one man and one woman.  Two: the one man, one woman, union reflects Christ and his Church.  Leviticus 18 proscribes all other forms of sexual contact because any other arrangement augurs “confusion” (to use the very apt KJV language) with respect to the image of God and the bride of Christ.  The whole structure of Leviticus can be viewed as a prophetic outline of the history of salvation, which is a much broader topic.  But suffice to say that for this reason, too, the teachings on sexuality are a whole different matter from the dietary laws.  And the Apostles confirm frequently in the New Testament (e.g. Romans 1, Revelation 21:2) that the issue of exclusively monogamous heterosexuality is sealed in God’s order for creation and redemption.

Second comment:  I would differ from the substantiation I heard for suspending dietary laws (and circumcision, which was also mentioned in this light).  I would disagree that is was done for expediency in propagating the gospel to the gentile world; that would be a utilitarian position.  The  Apostles and the Jerusalem Church appear quite ready in Acts to hold the line on Jewish custom applied to gentile converts.  Thus they suspended the dietary (and circumcision) ordinances based on revelation, not expediency.  First, as recorded in Mark 7:19, they had some teaching from Jesus that the dietary ordinances were passing away.  Second, they understood the Holy Spirit to have obviated these ordinances by his calling of gentile believers in their native condition, so to speak (Acts 15:8ff).

Please forgive if I misheard or have misrepresented any portion of the program.  The Show’s emphasis on restoring Biblical literacy within the Church is a critical ministry in these times.
